While the staff of The
Iowa Book Doctors hails from vastly different homes, we've all become
neighbors in this small town. Some of us are Southern girls from the
swamps of Louisiana and the hills of Tennessee. A few of us have worked
in the great publishing houses of New York, or bustled alongside the
glitterati of Hollywood. We are former lawyers, investment bankers,
waitresses, journalists, and computer programmers, in addition to being
talented writers.
The Iowa Book Doctors
offers you the best of both worlds. We bring an array of cosmopolitan
and regional perspectives, but also the small town values that you learn
when your neighbors become your friends. We combine a variety of experiences
with our midwestern work ethic, and that combination produces the vision
and integrity necessary for any task. Whatever your project may be,
the Doctors who work with you will be handpicked to suit your work.
We promise.
Our Doctors have held editorial
positions with over 30 journals and publishing houses, including Prentiss
Hall, Iowa Review, McGraw-Hill, Greensboro Review, International
Poetry Review, and Pergamon Press.
We've published books with
Harper-Collins, Antares Press, Oxford University Press, Simon and Schuster,
Peachpit Press, and St. Martins press, written screenplays for Walt
Disney, and been anthologized in Best New American Voices 2001.
We've contributed to over
50 magazines and newspapers, including Black Warrior Review,
GQ, Greensboro Review, Prairie Schooner, The
Antioch Review, Boulevard, American Book Review, Hayden's
Ferry Review, Story Quarterly, Third Coast, and MidAmerican
Review.
We've received such honors
as The Michener Fellowship, The Reader's Choice Award, The Yale Grant,
The Elmore A. Willets Prize, The Breadloaf Fellowship, The Pirates Alley
Faulkner Society Short Story Contest, The Glimmertrain Contest,
and others.
Of course, each of us is
also a student or graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop, the first
creative writing degree program in a U.S. university. Each of us came
to Iowa to attend this incredible program. Though The Iowa Book Doctors
is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Writers' Workshop, we all
learned a great deal there, where each of us was honored to work with
many of the country's top writers and teachers.
